PIE Meeting
January 4, 2011

In attendance: Carla Wuthrich, Kate Dodge, Frank Twarog, Andrew Dennison, Patti Drew, Elisabeth Garvey, Sue Hoeppner, Bob Goudreau, Joyce Wright, Heather Way, Renee Durochia, Kelli Brown, Ali Douglas
  1. Gathering and introductions

  1. Open House Review and Responses
    • Elisabeth and Patty were at the table on Open House night (thank you!) and shared responses from the night.
    • 16 forms were collected. From these responses, athletic fields, Playground, Enrichment, and school food were the most often checked off as areas of interest.
    • $16 (and change) collected from the donation jar and handed over to Heather Way at this meeting. Bob will pass along the information of how much money was raised from the donations for dinner that evening.

    1. BiLaws: The group agreed that the draft is an emerging and “living” document capable of change as ideas and the identify of the group continues to solidfy.

    1. Initiative Summary
    • Playground is the only “working initiative” at the moment. Other initiatives are still emerging and will have team leaders bringing proposals and frameworks to the next meeting.
    • See chart below for initiatives and corresponding team leaders and notes.


    • Next PIE meeting is slated for February 1st at 6 pm .

    1. Playground
    • Kate Dodge is currently working on grants and is scheduled to meet with two other interested parents on grant writing this Thursday.
    • Team Leader: Kate Dodge
    • Frank T shared similar projects from the Town’s Rec Department.
    2. School Nutrition
    • Team Leader: Kelli Brown
    • 3 information slips passed along, and a few others have shared interest in this initiative.
    3. Enrichment
    • Patti Drew to call the two families who expressed interest in this initiative to learn more about their ideas.
    • Potential for literacy, math, and Four Winds to be under this sub-committee as well.
    • Definition of “enrichment” is yet uncertain and will be molded by those expressing interest.
    4. K-4 play
    • Music teacher (Jenny Cianciola) has expressed interest in this effort.
    • Will follow up on this at a later date.
    5. Welcoming Committee
    • Gina Van Hook has previously expressed an interest in this.
    • Will follow up on this at a later date.
    6. Green Team
    • Sue will e-mail Steve to see if this is a program that may be best served as a student-led iniaitive through student council.
    7. Staff Appreciation
    • Group agreed that this year, all staff will be recognized in the spring as in past years.





    1. Next Agenda items
    • Team leaders from the playground, nutrition, and enrichment programs
    • Review list of enrichment activities currently happening at HCS generated at the last staff meeting.
    • Parent representative job sharing role/expectations (from Patti)
    • Fundraising : an ongoing conversation
    • Review of funds available from Heather


    1. Action items
    • (Jenn or Carla )Schedule Nancy (Math Bridging Program) and Betsy (literacy program) to talk about how parent volunteers are being utilized and how PIE can support this. Also would like to invite representatives from Four Winds to do a similar presentation.
    • Patti will call the folks who expressed an interest in enrichment programs to see where their interest lies.
    • Patti will draft what parent representative roles may be.
    • Joyce will talk to Betsy and Nancy about utilizing PIE to help find volunteers.
    • Bob will bring list of enrichment activities to the next PIE meeting (from a previous staff meeting).
    • Communication via Viking, asking staff to steer interested folks to PIE, and personal connection (grass root efforts).
    • Perhaps bring a camera to the next meeting to make grade level photos to send to classroom teachers for increased recognition.
    • Kelli will make a draft of a form for those interested in bringing a cause/concern to the PIE group.
    • Carla will talk to Jen about Fundraising for an agenda item next month.
